The University Health Services (UHS) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi continues to demonstrate its leadership in staff development and medical specialization as it transitions from a modest dressing station into a fully accredited district-level hospital.
Over the past decade, the facility has invested significantly in the training and professional growth of its workforce, positioning itself as a centre of excellence in patient care, health education, and research.
Building capacity through specialized training
UHS has supported staff across diverse disciplines to pursue advanced studies and clinical specializations in areas critical to modern healthcare delivery.
Among the hospital’s dedicated professionals are several staff who have pursued advanced training in critical fields of healthcare. Afua Anderson has completed training in Advanced Midwifery, while Jane Yamson has specialised as a Haematology Nurse.
James Nii Amar Ayiku advanced in Community Psychiatry, and Helen Minka qualified as an Ophthalmic Nurse. Similarly, Nuhaila Ibrahim trained in Family Nursing, and Felicia Amankwa gained expertise in Emergency Nursing.
The hospital’s surgical and theatre operations have been strengthened by Rosemary Annan, who specialised in Theatre Nursing.
In the area of disease management, Elizabeth Nsowaa completed training in Infectious Disease Nursing, while Donna Webber focused on Paediatric Nursing, and Esther Owusu in Orthopaedic Nursing.
These developments have strengthened the hospital’s ability to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to both the university community and the general public.
Integrating training, service, and research
As a teaching facility within Ghana’s premier science and technology university, UHS continues to train medical and allied health students through structured clinical rotations, mentorship, and hands-on exposure.
The hospital’s faculty and senior clinicians play dual roles as educators and practitioners, ensuring that students experience the realities of healthcare delivery in a technologically advancing environment.
The hospital also promotes research that addresses local and national health challenges. From public health studies to clinical trials, UHS encourages evidence-based practice and innovation. Research outcomes are regularly disseminated through conferences, publications, and community outreach initiatives.
Expanding specialized services
With its upgraded infrastructure and district-level designation, the UHS now offers a wide range of specialized services, including diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, maternal and child health, mental health and psychosocial support, chronic disease management, and preventive health programs.
Digital transformation initiatives such as the introduction of electronic medical records have improved efficiency and patient access, while continuous infrastructure upgrades enhance service delivery and patient comfort.
The transformation of KNUST’s University Health Services stands as a testament to the power of staff development and institutional vision. By investing in human capital and expanding its scope of specialized services, UHS continues to fulfill its mission of providing patient-centred care, world-class training, and impactful research in line with KNUST’s broader commitment to science, technology, and innovation.
